The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) set out roles and responsibilities for the various parties involved in construction activities. They should be applied fully in school building or renovation and refurbishment projects.
Under the regulations, the client who is requiring the construction work to be completed should appoint a principal designer and, where there is more than one contractor involved, a principal contractor. We ask the client to provide adequate construction information to enable us to draw up designs and a project phase plan.
We also take responsibility for the coordination and preparation of creating a health and safety file. As the principal contractor we are also responsible for the day to day site management and safety.
We work alongside a number of different school setups including local authority community schools, independent schools and academies.

Managing disruption
A majority of our current school works take place during public holiday, half term and weekends.
Construction safety in schools
All our school refurbishment projects are subject to appropriate risk assessment. Although much of school refurbishment work takes place during the long summer holidays, we are always fully aware and mindful that schools may remain open for summer activities or for the use of community groups.
How we manage this:
- All our staff are fully briefed on the dangers of working on a school refurbishment project prior to commencing any work
- We have systems in place to complete regular checks as the work takes place identifying any potential risks to pupils, staff and the general public
- Keep staff and pupils fully informed of access points, school boundaries or fire escape routes
- Clear signage alerting people to danger and warning of trespassing
